FORMER President Benjamin Mkapa has called for serious reforms of the United Nations to reflect the current geopolitical configuration.

Speaking at a symposium to mark the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations, Mr Mkapa said there was moral and economic imperative for reforms in order to move in consonance with the current realities.

“Main challenges confronting the world today and which are the main pre- occupations of the UN today have assumed a global dimension and therefore require a holistic and unified global approach, which demands a UN that is truly universal in both its anatomy and conduct,” he said.

He further said that there were still a multitude of scourges and threats that are emerging today that cause untold sorrow to mankind and demand action. “There is beauty and power in unity, we must therefore not relent in calling for true reforms of the UN so that it can continue to serve mankind better,” said the former president.

Moreover, he said collective security was too precious to be left to the dictates and whims of the rich and powerful, adding responsibility must be bestowed on global orders which are firmly grounded on a binding international legal order that seeks true collective security and accountability.

The former president said despite the political disappointments witnessed, there were positive contributions that the UN has made to mankind, it has done a remarkable job in areas of humanitarian assistance, environment as well as social and economic development.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr Benard Membe, said the 2012 Population and Housing Census estimated that the number of youth aged between 15 and 35 was 15 million out of the total population of 44 million Tanzanians.

The youth therefore constitute 35 per cent of the total population. “This group is the future of our country, they have to be involved in the decision making processes and be involved in crafting and implementing development strategies as we prepare the nation to implement the 2030 Development Agenda, involvement of the youth is critically important,” he said.
