CHAMA Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Isles presidential candidate, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein, has promised to raise Zanzibarâs economic growth from the current 7.2 to 10 per cent in the next five years if re-elected, vowing also to sustain the government of national unity (GNU).
Addressing CCM members, fans and residents of Micheweni District at Konde-Police ground, Konde town, North Pemba, Dr Shein emphasised on political tolerance before and after the much-awaited elections, including those who will lose to show political maturity.
âWe have been united under GNU. We should remain united because it is prerequisite to development. We need to enhance GNU for peace and stability,â Dr Shein said, anticipating speedy economical growth if re-elected to serve Zanzibaris for another five years.
Dr Shein informed cheering crowd braving scorching sun at the ground a lot of success had been recorded and his outgoing government has already laid a foundation of development strategy to move Zanzibar ahead. Improved health facilities, roads and education are some of the visible successes in Konde area and other parts of Zanzibar, as Dr Maua Daftar, a CCM cadre from north Pemba said that Dr Shein should be thanked for supporting entrepreneurs in the Islands.
âImportation of vegetables and fruits from Tanzania mainland has declined in recent months, just because many women and youth are now engaged in small farming producing tomatoes, carrots and water melon,â Dr Shein and Dr Maua said.
He said that his government will continue supporting the development of entrepreneurs because it is the only sure way to curb unemployment challenges facing youth worldwide. He said farming and trade can help get many people including youth out of idleness and poverty. âWe are encouraging PPP (Public Private Partnership) and never trust candidates promising to tackle unemployment within a short period.
It is impossible as the government is able to employ only 2,500 people while the youth without are more than 12,000!â Dr Shein said, adding that unemployment prevalence stands at 14 per cent. The CCM candidate said many social and economical problems facing Zanzibar would be addressed after the construction of a new sea port able to accommodate three big cargo ships and handle about three hundred thousand containers.
âWith good plans in hand, including boosting tourists from current 320,000 to 500,000 by 2020, Zanzibar anticipates to raise its revenue collection from the current 338bn/- to 8bn/- monthly. We need more good hotels in addition to the current 17 five-star hotels in the Islands,â Dr Shein said as his wife- First lady Mrs Mwanamwema witnessed.
Speaker Mr Pandu Ameir Kificho, State Minister, Mr Mohamed Aboud Mohamed and CCM Deputy Secretary General, Mr Vuai Ali Vuai also attended the campaign rally, asking voters in the area to vote for Dr Shein and other party candidates in the upcoming general elections, including Dr John Pombe Magufuli and Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan for union government presidency.
