The state-run Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) has advised election aspirants in Ukerewe district in Mwanza Region to avoid using defective vessels during their campaigns.

The authorityâ€™s officer in-charge in Mwanza, Captain Michael Rogers said that all councillorship and parliamentary candidates must adhere to safety of vessels plying Lake Victoria. Itâ€™s important to ensure that all vessels meet transport requirements,â€ he said.

He urged all aspirants contesting various positions of leadership to hire boats which can resist storms in Lake Victoria. â€œWe shall continue carrying out inspections for all vessels plying the lake, but all people must be vigilant to avoid disasters,â€ he said.

Meanwhile, Mwanza Regional Police Commander Mr Charles Mkumbo has appealed to the regionâ€™s residents to report to police any defective vessels transporting passengers in the lake.
